Dark Chocolate for Valentine’s Day

heart

This year, my Valentine’s gift was dark chocolate. YUM!!

Did you know that dark chocolate is good for you?

Dark chocolate has far more antioxidants than milk or white chocolate (or even strawberries!). These other two chocolates cannot make any health claims. Antioxidants protect the body from aging caused by free radicals.

Dark chocolate has 65 percent or higher cocoa content.

Chocolate is made from plants, which means it contains many of the health benefits of dark vegetables.  Maybe you could try sharing this fact at dinner time 🙂

What is your favorite treat on Valentine’s Day?

It’s Time for a Healthy Trade Up

WHOLE WHEAT BREADwhole wheat breadThe latest way to keep my family healthy

I started making whole wheat bread over vacation.  The irresistible smell of baking bread, makes my kid’s mouth water!  A fresh loaf only lasts day at our house.

The secret is…they have NO IDEA IT IS WHOLE WHEAT!

(shhhh….let’s keep this a secret from them!)

Benefits of whole wheat:

  • It is low in fat and cholesterol
  • provides fiber, vitamin E & B
  • helps lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer

What type of bread does your family eat??

Do you like whole wheat bread?

Glitz, Glamour and Grace

My exercise this weekend was walking around New York City!

We had the best time enjoying the sights and sounds of the city at Christmas time.

This was my first time seeing the Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Show with the amazing Rockette’s!!  If I hadn’t gone into teaching, I would have loved to have been a Rockette!!

Guess how many steps my pedometer read?

Wild Alaskan King Salmon

 sheffreys

We have recently added wild salmon to our diets, as the nutritional benefits speak for itself!  This Alaskan King Salmon is an excellent source of high quality protein.  Wild Alaskan salmon also has record levels of Omega 3 oils, the heart healthy wonder found in high concentration in these fish.

My husband is happy with his 52lb salmon caught just last week in Alaska!!

Does your family make fish a part of your meals?

Blueberries…my new favorite fruit!!

blueberries

We have been picking a lot of BLUEBERRIES this summer!

They have been sooo good.

Did you know that blueberries are bursting with nutrients and of course FLAVOR

**(and they are even low in calories).

1 Cup of Blueberries=

31% daily vitamin C, 20% daily manganese, 16% daily dietary fiber, 7% daily vitamin E

They are a great source of antioxidants(capacity to destroy free radicals) too!

Do you and your family make time to pick fresh fruit?
